"Balance Beam" is a short story by Margaret Blair Young which was published in Love Chains: Stories (1997). The story is about Jenny, a teenaged gymnast, whose father is divorcing her mother. He says he's divorcing her so that the government will pay for the nursing home required by her M.S., but he gets engaged to one of his college students shortly after the divorce is final.
