"October Soil" is a short story by Jack Harrell. The story is about an unnamed husband and father-to-be who has just moved from Illinois to the west to go to grad school. The story explores fatherhood from a number of different perspectives: The main character is about to become a father, but his own father abandoned the family. The main character also thinks about how Adam must have felt right after he left the Garden of Eden.
