"Opening Day" is a short story by Douglas Thayer about Troy, who has just come home from a mission in Germany. Troy was deeply affected by the toll that World War II took on the people and cities of Germany, and he decides that he doesn't want to be involved in any sort of killing, including hunting. However, Troy and his father have hunted together for years, and Troy doesn't know how to tell his father that he doesn't want to hunt any more.

"Opening Day" was first published in Dialogue in 1970. It was reprinted Under the Cottonwoods and Other Mormon Stories (1977) and in Bright Angels & Familiars: Contemporary Mormon Stories (1992).
