[edit] Inspiration and Origins
Jessica Day George had written a half dozen novels for young adult readers and her editor was encouraging her to write a novel for a younger audience.[1] One night, as Jessica Day George was getting into bed, she suddenly thought: "On Tuesdays, when it was bored, Castle Slaughter liked to grow new rooms."[2] That sentence became the seed of a new story idea and the castle (later renamed Castle Glower) became the setting for the middle grade book Tuesdays at the Castle.
[edit] Plot
Princess Celie is the youngest princess in the royal family, who live in Castle Glower. However, Castle Glower is no ordinary king's castle: It's a magical castle that can change its layout and add rooms or hallways. Princess Celie knows the castle better than anyone, so when her parents disappear, she must work with the castle and the rest of her family to protect the kingdom.
[edit] Critical Reception
Critical response to Tuesdays at the Castle was very positive. Writing for School Library Journal, Caitlin Augusta said "A satisfying mix of Hogwarts and Howl's Moving Castle, . . . Castle Glower helps its true citizens, but never at the expense of plot or character development."[3] Kirkus Reviews said "These kids are clever, as is George's lively adventure."[4]
Emily Ellsworth wrote in the Deseret News: "Like . . . Jessica Day George's previous works, her newest novel brings a spunky main character, plenty of intrigue and witty dialogue. Pair that with the castle featured as a character in the story, and it's a winning combination that middle-grade readers will love."[5]
